News of technology-related courseware offered online for true distance learning. Our focus is on open or free courses, but we know also that many educational institutions also offer proprietary courses of instruction for a traditional fee.

We focus our searches on news of the former, but accept inputs and, when we find them, will also add newsfeeds from the latter.

The two institutions with high technical merits and and a history of offering free courses are, of course, The University of California at Berkeley (Berkeley) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) OpenCourseWare initiative

Berkeley offers an ever-expanding group of webcasts and podcasts of courses as well as their special arrangement with Google to provide free, online videos of selected classes.

MIT on the other hand has been growing an extensive, almost mind-boggling range of free courses in several languages under the banner of its OpenCourseWare (OCW). OCW shares free lecture notes, exams, and other resources from more than 1800 courses from MIT’s entire curriculum.

Recent statistics claim 52 million visits by 40 million visitors from virtually every country. MIT OpenCourseWare averages 1 million visits each month; translations receive 500,000 more.

MIT’s OCW is accessed by an international population of educators and learners.
